To Consult or not to Consult
When to Hire a Consultant
No matter how hard you try to grind out a living from your business, you will be inevitably faced with the unexpected reality that you will need advice in order to move to the next incarnation of your business. That’s when you will need to hire a skilful consultant to help you with the proficiencies you haven’t developed, yet.
Here is what you might consider before we work together:
1. Make certain an advisor is needed:
The advisor must posses the skills you don’t have. Make sure to communicate this clearly when you have a plateau in growth
2. Know what you need done:
Will you need a pair of hands or an expert to guide you? Write down what you feel are the hurtles in the way of your goals
3. You must change the way you think and listen:
Your mind must be open and honest about how you do things. In order for leadership vision to change you must have constructive conversations and except some humility
4. Find the consultant that will focus on your specific needs:
Some firms have a template of pre-made solutions that may not fit you. It’s like the difference of a slim fit suit XL and a regular XL. The consultant must delivery a custom made plan to your needs. Nothing cookie cutter will do
5. Reference check:
The consultant must be able to provide you with references and testimonials of the service they provide
6. Change Agent:
The advisor must be a catalyst and teacher of change management
7. Revitalize yourself:
You must be ready to peel back all the layers of what has uninspired you
8. Hire to assist you in your stand alone business:
The consultant can be a sounding board for you to vent to
9. Unemotional outside perspective:
Provides unemotional guidance with a set of facts
10. Highly specialized skill set:
Does not have a wide range of interests to consult in
11. Short commitment level:
Advantage to the business owner as you will not have to take on an employee and payroll taxes
12. Evades Politics:
No need to be 100% engaged with employees but only works with owner and the decision maker to get the work done effectively
