Pharmacists continue to produce better outcomes in chronic disease management, which improves life expectancy, which increases demand for services and reduce hospital visits, at a discount. As the baby boomers age into retirement we will be faced with many more demands on the health system, intensely.

As that happens, demand for healthcare services will increase radically. Assuming provincial government get their chit together and actually fund PharmaCare correctly, and in turn, PharmaCare funds the pharmacy’s dispensing fees to the correct 2019 level with a budgeted increase every two years leading to a 17- 20$ dispensing fee.

Now that means all components of the healthcare system will need to play a little catch-up… Oh wait a minute. Aren’t these provincial leaders all talking about a national PharmaCare system?

The insurance component of healthcare reform and lack of leadership willing to do something about it will add up to escalating demands, lower reimbursements and patient issues.

At the same time pharmacists should move into the new value services environment. We expect current government reimbursement levels to increase by approximately 15% over the next 3 years while supply costs continue to rise. This is not the perfect storm for healthcare but successfully weathering this storm will require innovative and creative solutions and highly developed change management skills centred on transformational change.

However, historically in pharmacy, sweeping change has not been practiced and generally diminutive change method is the rule. Methods, practices, or configurations are changed, but given the pace of change and the magnitude of the drivers, incremental change will not get us where we need to be.

What is required is a change in the fundamental way we think and behave. Transformational change is what government’s and pharmacy organizations are struggling with. To be successful in the future, they will need to place a premium on innovation, creativity, and risk taking to support new ways of thinking and behaving.

So, next time when a jackass is trying to rush their prescriptions from you and ask you why it’s taking so long. Just tell them you are trying to figure what medication will kill him and which one he needs to have with cheese.

Let’s start with increasing the dispensing fee to $20, please!

Transformation of pharmacy is at the vanguard of professional conversations and health systems.
